What we DO
Teenager groups
We have children at the age of 14 and higher. We learn them some practical skills and we do all sorts of activities like making bracelets, paintings. That is why we started a teenagers / young adult group.
Educational workshops
Although every region in Bali have schools (SLB) for children with a mental disability. But we experience there is not much specific knowledge about guiding these children and to use fitting education methods. The teachers try, with their own insights, to fit the needs of every individual’s needs and possibilities of the students, but do not have enough instruments and knowledge.
Play learn groups
The play-and-learn groups are designed for the youngest children. We currently have six such groups: two in Tukadmungga and four in Lodtunduh. Each group is supervised by a teacher and an assistant. Thanks to this staffing—and the occasional presence of parents—there is sufficient support to provide individual attention to the children.
Teach the teacher
We began by training Balinese teachers through an intensive program involving Dutch volunteers. A key part of the training was providing background information on various disabilities and syndromes. The Balinese teachers learned how to work with these different disabilities. We introduced a system where experienced teachers mentored new ones; in this way, we preserved the knowledge and practical experience regarding the support of children with intellectual disabilities.
